Difference Between SSD and HDD | SSD vs HDD

Hey, are you likely to buy a PC and you are also confused about which drive should be in your system- SSD or HDD? Are you thinking that what is the difference between SSD and HDD? So don’t worry I’ll tell you all the differences and also compare which one is best, “SSD vs HDD“.

Firstly I would like to tell you that neither SSD is best nor HDD. It totally depends on your needs and budget. I think we should know about both in detail before knowing the Difference Between SSD and HDD.

Difference Between SSD and HDD

  • SSD is 10x faster than HDD approximately.
  • SSD has low power consumption.
  • HDD is cheaper than SSD.
  • HDD has a large storage capacity.
  • SSD is more durable than HDD.
  • SSD has lightweight in comparison to HDD

What is SSD

SSD stands for Solid State Drive.  It is a data storage device that is nearly similar to Pendrive.  It contains your data in a microchip. Basically it is called NAND based flash memory which is a non-volatile memory.

Non-volatile means when you turn off your PC, it even remembers all the locations of your data. It doesn’t have any physical arm to read/write data that makes it very faster than HDD.

For example, if you are in a library and somebody orders you to bring any particular book then you’ll search for the book which will take time. In another case when you know where the book is then it will become so easier for you and also take less time.

The same phenomena apply in the case of SSD and HDD. SSD knows locations of whole data that’s stored while HDD search for data through its physical arm that makes it slower than SSD.

During the early days of SSD, rumours had spread that your data would be lost after a few years, meaning it would be deleted by itself. This rumour is certainly not true with today’s technology.

The form factor of SSD is actually similar to a regular hard drive. It comes in a standard 1.8 “, 2.5” or 3.5 “size that can fit in connectors for the same size HDD. The connector used for these standard sizes is SATA. Small SSDs are available that are called mini-SATA.

Advantage Of SSD

  • Low power consumption.
  • Durability.
  • SSD has a speed of 500 Mbps.
  • Light in weight.

Disadvantage Of SSD

  • Low Storage Capacity.
  • Expensive.

What is HDD

Hard disk or HDD is the same thing, it is a physical disk that we use to store all the small and big files of our computer. The difference between hard disk and RAM is that hard disk is the thing that is used to store data, but RAM is used to run things stored data in that storage.

When we shut down the computer, anything lying in the RAM is cleared. But in HDD, the data is not erased even if the computer is turned off.

A disk rotates inside the hard disk. We measure the speed of hard disk rotation in RPM (Revolutions Per Minute). Most hard disks are 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm, of course, 7200 rpm hard disk is much faster than 5400 rpm.

Hard Drive

While SSD doesn’t have any disk to rotate which is the biggest difference between SSD and HDD and also the biggest reason for getting slow of an HDD.

Why does Hard Disk become Slower?

Whenever we store data on Hard Disk, it is stored in pieces, and sometimes those pieces go to different parts of Hard Disk. When there is too much data, then our computer has some difficulty in finding things in our hard disk, which make it slow down.

In the case of SSD, we can’t store so much data at a similar cost of HDD. Because SSD is so much expensive in comparison to HDD.

Advantages of HDD

One of the biggest advantages of using SDD is that you can keep a lot of data in it at a very low price. Nowadays 1 TB storage is very common and gradually the number is increasing day by day.

Being cheaper than SSD, it becomes the first choice of people. Because, if we compare both then SSD is three to four times costlier.

Let, you want to store 1TB data in your PC, you have to pay three to four times fewer rupees in HDD.

  • Cheaper than SSD.
  • Large storage capacity.
  • A large number of users.

Disadvantages of HDD

  • Slower than SSD.
  • You can lose your whole data if HDD crashes.
  • Heavy and bulky than SSD.
  • High power consumption.

These are the main “Difference Between SSD and HDD“. It will help you to choose a suitable drive for your computer.
